754 - The 10 Commandments-No Adultery

October[MS1] 19, 2008

Sermon #753

The 10 Commandments-No Adultery

Exodus 20:14 (NKJV) 14“You shall not commit adultery.

I. Fornication (voluntary sexual intercourse between two unmarried persons or two persons not married to each other)

A. Begins with lust

Proverbs 6:23 - 25 (NKJV) 23For the commandment is a lamp, And the law a light; Reproofs of instruction are the way of life, 24To keep you from the evil woman, From the flattering tongue of a seductress. 25Do not lust after her beauty in your heart, nor let her allure you with her eyelids.

Matthew 5:27 - 28 (NKJV) 27“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

B. Pornography

The Statistics Are Staggering:

* 66% of Internet-using men between the ages of 18-34 look at online porn at least once a month (1)

* 55% of pastors admitted to participating with porn online. (2)

* Over 40% of women on line are involved in problematic cyber behavior. (3)

* The largest consumer of Internet pornography is the 12 to 17 year old age group. (4)

* 70% of Internet porn traffic occurs during the 9 am to 5 pm workday. (5)

* Two out of three companies have disciplined employees for misusing the Net at work and pornography topped the list of abuses (6)

C. Rape

Deuteronomy 22:22 - 29 (NKJV) 22“If a man is found lying with a woman married to a husband, then both of them shall die—the man that lay with the woman, and the woman; so you shall put away the evil from Israel. 23“If a young woman who is a virgin is betrothed to a husband, and a man finds her in the city and lies with her, 24then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry out in the city, and the man because he humbled his neighbor’s wife; so you shall put away the evil from among you. 25“But if a man finds a betrothed young woman in the countryside, and the man forces her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die.

26But you shall do nothing to the young woman; there is in the young woman no sin deserving of death, for just as when a man rises against his neighbor and kills him, even so is this matter. 27For he found her in the countryside, and the betrothed young woman cried out, but there was no one to save her. 28“If a man finds a young woman who is a virgin, who is not betrothed, and he seizes her and lies with her, and they are found out, 29then the man who lay with her shall give to the young woman’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife because he has humbled her; he shall not be permitted to divorce her all his days.

D. Prostitution

Proverbs 7:6 - 27 (NKJV) 6For at the window of my house I looked through my lattice, 7And saw among the simple, I perceived among the youths, A young man devoid of understanding, 8Passing along the street near her corner; And he took the path to her house 9In the twilight, in the evening, In the black and dark night. 10And there a woman met him, With the attire of a harlot, and a crafty heart. 11She was loud and rebellious, Her feet would not stay at home. 12At times she was outside, at times in the open square, Lurking at every corner. 13 So she caught him and kissed him; With an impudent face she said to him: 14I have peace offerings with me; Today I have paid my vows. 15So I came out to meet you, Diligently to seek your face, And I have found you.

16I have spread my bed with tapestry, Colored coverings of Egyptian linen. 17I have perfumed my bed With myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. 18Come, let us take our fill of love until morning; Let us delight ourselves with love. 19For my husband is not at home; He has gone on a long journey; 20He has taken a bag of money with him, And will come home on the appointed day.” 21With her enticing speech she caused him to yield, With her flattering lips she seduced him. 22Immediately he went after her, as an ox goes to the slaughter, Or as a fool to the correction of the stocks, 23Till an arrow struck his liver. As a bird hastens to the snare, He did not know it would cost his life. 24Now therefore, listen to me, my children; Pay attention to the words of my mouth: 25Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways, Do not stray into her paths; 26For she has cast down many wounded, And all who were slain by her were strong men. 27Her house is the way to hell, Descending to the chambers of death.

Proverbs 9:13 - 18 (NKJV) 13A foolish woman is clamorous; She is simple, and knows nothing. 14For she sits at the door of her house, On a seat by the highest places of the city, 15To call to those who pass by, Who go straight on their way: 16“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here”; And as for him who lacks understanding, she says to him, 17“Stolen water is sweet, And bread eaten in secret is pleasant.” 18But he does not know that the dead are there, That her guests are in the depths of hell.

ILL: I preached in the city of Baltimore, , when I walked away from the church the women were sitting on the porch steps, inviting men to the cot that were just inside the doorway.

Joel 3:3 (NKJV) They have cast lots for My people, Have given a boy as payment for a harlot, And sold a girl for wine, that they may drink.

ILL: When we were on a medical mission in Haiti a man approached, “you want a girl?” he asked. When I said “No!” he answered, “you want a boy?” He was actually approaching missionaries and trying to sell children for sex!

E. Sodomy

Genesis 19:4 - 11 (NKJV) 4Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. 5And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally. 6So Lot went out to them through the doorway, shut the door behind him, 7and said, “Please, my brethren, do not do so wickedly! 8See now, I have two daughters who have not known a man; please, let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you wish; only do nothing to these men, since this is the reason they have come under the shadow of my roof.”

9And they said, “Stand back!” Then they said, “This one came in to stay here, and he keeps acting as a judge; now we will deal worse with you than with them.” So they pressed hard against the man Lot, and came near to break down the door. 10But the men reached out their hands and pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door. 11And they struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they became weary trying to find the door.

Leviticus 18:22 - 25 (NKJV) 22You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination. 23Nor shall you mate with any animal, to defile yourself with it. Nor shall any woman stand before an animal to mate with it. It is perversion. 24‘Do not defile yourselves with any of these things; for by all these the nations are defiled, which I am casting out before you. 25For the land is defiled; therefore I visit the punishment of its iniquity upon it, and the land vomits out its inhabitants.

Leviticus 20:10 - 21 (NKJV) 10‘The man who commits adultery with another man’s wife, he who commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress, shall surely be put to death. 11The man who lies with his father’s wife has uncovered his father’s nakedness; both of them shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them. 12If a man lies with his daughter-in-law, both of them shall surely be put to death. They have committed perversion. Their blood shall be upon them. 13If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them. 14If a man marries a woman and her mother, it is wickedness. They shall be burned with fire, both he and they, that there may be no wickedness among you.

15If a man mates with an animal, he shall surely be put to death, and you shall kill the animal. 16If a woman approaches any animal and mates with it, you shall kill the woman and the animal. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood is upon them. 17‘If a man takes his sister, his father’s daughter or his mother’s daughter, and sees her nakedness and she sees his nakedness, it is a wicked thing. And they shall be cut off in the sight of their people. He has uncovered his sister’s nakedness. He shall bear his guilt. 18If a man lies with a woman during her sickness and uncovers her nakedness, he has exposed her flow, and she has uncovered the flow of her blood. Both of them shall be cut off from their people. 19‘You shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother’s sister nor of your father’s sister, for that would uncover his near of kin. They shall bear their guilt. 20If a man lies with his uncle’s wife, he has uncovered his uncle’s nakedness. They shall bear their sin; they shall die childless. 21If a man takes his brother’s wife, it is an unclean thing. He has uncovered his brother’s nakedness. They shall be childless.

Romans 1:24 - 27 (NKJV) 24Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

1 Corinthians 6:9 - 10 (NKJV) 9Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.

1 Timothy 1:8 - 11 (NKJV) 8But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, 9knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, 11according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust.

ILL: I know that I am going to be accused, that there are those who say people are born with sexual preference. If that were true God could not call it sin – but he does! If you never have homosexual sex you will never become a homosexual!

II. Marriage: A public deliration under witnesses

Ruth 4:9 - 13 (NKJV) 9And Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses this day that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, from the hand of Naomi. 10Moreover, Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, I have acquired as my wife, to perpetuate the name of the dead through his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brethren and from his position at the gate. You are witnesses this day.” 11And all the people who were at the gate, and the elders, said, “We are witnesses. The Lord make the woman who is coming to your house like Rachel and Leah, the two who built the house of Israel; and may you prosper in Ephrathah and be famous in Bethlehem. 12May your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, because of the offspring which the Lord will give you from this young woman.” 13So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife; and when he went in to her, the Lord gave her conception, and she bore a son.

John 2:1 - 2 (NKJV) 1On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.

ILL: There is no such a thing as a secret marriage even as there is and never will be a secret Christian!

A. One wife under the New Testament

1 Timothy 3:1 - 4 (NKJV) 1This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. 2A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; 3not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; 4one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence…

ILL: If everymarriage is defined in the United States as between same sex it must also allow plural marriages. Plural marriage is the eternal right of Mormons under the D&C 132.

B. Sex in marriage

Hebrews 13:4 (NKJV) 4Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

ILL: The book of Hebrews was written to the Church.

III. Adultery

Genesis 20:3 - 7 (NKJV) 3But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, “Indeed you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man’s wife.” 4But Abimelech had not come near her; and he said, “Lord, will You slay a righteous nation also? 5Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she, even she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the integrity of my heart and innocence of my hands I have done this.” 6And God said to him in a dream, “Yes, I know that you did this in the integrity of your heart. For I also withheld you from sinning against Me; therefore I did not let you touch her. 7Now therefore, restore the man’s wife; for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you shall live. But if you do not restore her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours.”

Job 24:15 - 19 (NKJV) 15The eye of the adulterer waits for the twilight, Saying, ‘No eye will see me’; And he disguises his face. 16In the dark they break into houses Which they marked for themselves in the daytime; They do not know the light. 17For the morning is the same to them as the shadow of death; If someone recognizes them, They are in the terrors of the shadow of death. 18“They should be swift on the face of the waters, Their portion should be cursed in the earth, So that no one would turn into the way of their vineyards. 19As drought and heat consume the snow waters, So the grave consumes those who have sinned.

Proverbs 6:26 - 35 (NKJV) 26For by means of a harlot A man is reduced to a crust of bread; And an adulteress will prey upon his precious life. 27Can a man take fire to his bosom, And his clothes not be burned? 28Can one walk on hot coals, And his feet not be seared? 29So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife; Whoever touches her shall not be innocent. 30People do not despise a thief If he steals to satisfy himself when he is starving. 31Yet when he is found, he must restore sevenfold; He may have to give up all the substance of his house. 32Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; He who does so destroys his own soul. 33Wounds and dishonor he will get, And his reproach will not be wiped away. 34For jealousy is a husband’s fury; Therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance. 35He will accept no recompense, Nor will he be appeased though you give many gifts.

Judgment for sexual sin within the church

ILL: Jesus saved a woman caught in adultery.

John 8:2 - 11 (NKJV) 2Now early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him; and He sat down and taught them. 3Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst, 4they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act. 5Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned. But what do You say?” 6This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear.

7So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” 8And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. 10When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” 11She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”

ILL: There you go – Jesus forgave her – yes but He said, “go and sin no more!” In other words “don’t do it again!”

1 Corinthians 5:1 - 13 (NKJV) 1It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles—that a man has his father’s wife! 2And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you. 3For I indeed, as absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged (as though I were present) him who has so done this deed. 4In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, 5deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 6Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?

7Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. 8Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. 9I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people. 10Yet I certainly did not mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—not even to eat with such a person. 12For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside? 13But those who are outside God judges. Therefore “put away from yourselves the evil person.”

ILL: This is a judgment of the Eldership, not of the congregation.

Don’t even talk about it!

Ephesians 5:1 - 12 (NKJV) 1Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. 2And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. 3But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; 4neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. 5For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

7Therefore do not be partakers with them. 8For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9(for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. 11And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. 12For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret.

ILL: We will cover this subject under “bearing false witness” which goes under the title of “gossip.” I have been the pastor of a church, where the conversation was always who was sleeping with whom.

Conclusion: all punishment for sexual offences does not come at the final judgment.

ILL: STD is a judgment!

Gonorrhea is a std. It is most common in young adults. The bacteria that cause gonorrhea can infect the genital tract, mouth or anus.

Genital herpes affects the genitals, buttocks or anal area. Genital herpes is a (STD). You can get it from having sex, even oral sex. The virus can spread even when sores are not present. Mothers can also infect their babies during childbirth.

AIDS stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. It is the most advanced stages of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV is a virus that kills or damages cells of the body's immune system. HIV most often spreads through unprotected sex with an infected person. Women can give it to their babies during pregnancy or childbirth. The first signs of HIV infection may be swollen glands and flu-like symptoms. These may come and go a month or two after infection. Severe symptoms may not appear until months or years later.

Syphilis is a (STD) caused by bacteria. It infects the genital area, lips, mouth, or anus of both men and women. You usually get syphilis from sexual contact with someone who has it. It can also pass from mother to baby during pregnancy. The early stage of syphilis usually causes a single, small, painless sore. Sometimes it causes swelling in nearby lymph nodes. If you do not treat it, syphilis usually causes a non-itchy skin rash, often on your hands and feet. Many people do not notice symptoms for years. Symptoms can go away and come back. The sores caused by syphilis make it easier to get or give someone HIV during sex. If you are pregnant, syphilis can cause birth defects, or you could lose your baby. In rare cases, syphilis causes serious health problems and even death.

ILL: As a Chaplin Intern at the Dorothy Dix Mental Hospital I have seen what STD does to people. A married couple who have no other sex partner cannot get a STD disease but there is no other protection that is guaranteed – none!

No fornication, homosexuality, or adultery – it is a command of God!
