846- Why the Church?

July 25, 2010

Sermon #846

Why the Church?

Introduction: The man said, "Jesus - Yes, the Church - No!" He was not the first. Some who have never been a part of a local church think of it as just another civic organization or club. Others who have been hurt in a church reject it. What they do not understand is that there is no vertical relationship to Jesus Christ without a horizontal relationship to other Christians.

I.    The Church is the people of God

Romans 9:19 - 27 (NKJV) 19You will say to me then, "Why does He still find fault? For who has resisted His will?"
20But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, "Why have you made me like this?"
21Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor?
22What if God, wanting to show His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction,
23and that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had prepared beforehand for glory,
24even us whom He called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?

25As He says also in Hosea:
"I will call them My people, who were not My people,
And her beloved, who was not beloved." 26"And it shall come to pass in the place where it was said to them,
'You are not My people,'
There they shall be called sons of the living God." 27Isaiah also cries out concerning Israel:  "Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea,
The remnant will be saved.

II. The Church is made up of "living stones"

1 Peter 2:1 - 10 (NKJV) 1Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking,  2as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,
3if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
4Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious,
5you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture,
"Behold, I lay in Zion
A chief cornerstone, elect, precious,
And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame."

7Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient,
"The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone,"8and
"A stone of stumbling
And a rock of offense."They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.
9But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
10who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.

A.    What is a "living stone?"

ILL: Man-made blocks are not "living stone;" living stone is stone that has been blasted or cut from a mountain. No two pieces are the same; all have jagged edges. If everyone in a church looks alike, dresses alike, walks alike and talks alike, it is not a church but a cult. The Apostle marks the place the church is to be formed. The Prophet blasts the stone out. The Evangelist brings it to the place. The Pastor/Teacher marks the stone to see where it will go. Then the stones are rubbed together. How do you polish a diamond? With other diamonds!

Most diamonds today are cut and polished in Israel. The diamond cutter examines the stone to see how he can get the largest stone with the most facets. A diamond-tipped chisel or a diamond saw is applied and the stone is reduced in size. Then each area is polished with a diamond-coated polisher. What happens when they are polished? The dross is carried away. That is why most people leave a church – they don't want to lose the dross. Peter wrote: "Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking,
as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the Word, that you may grow." People get mad at other members – they are filled with malice, hypocrisy or envy, and begin speaking evil about the church and its members or the Pastor. They leave the church before they are polished!

Jeremiah 18:1 - 6 (NKJV) 1The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying:
2"Arise and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause you to hear My words."
3Then I went down to the potter's house, and there he was, making something at the wheel.
4And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so he made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to make.
5Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
6"O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter?" says the Lord. "Look, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel!

B.     "Living Stones" are special people that proclaim the praises of Him.

ILL:  The purpose of the collected Church is to praise and worship

Acts 2:1 - 11 (NKJV) 1When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.
4And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven.
6And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.

7Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, "Look, are not all these who speak Galileans?
8And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?
9Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,
11Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God."

Acts 3:1 - 10 (NKJV) 1Now Peter and John went up together to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.
2And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms from those who entered the temple;
3who, seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked for alms.
4And fixing his eyes on him, with John, Peter said, "Look at us."
5So he gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them.

6Then Peter said, "Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk."
7And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.
8So he, leaping up, stood and walked and entered the temple with them—walking, leaping, and praising God.
9And all the people saw him walking and praising God.
10Then they knew that it was he who sat begging alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

Acts 4:23 - 31 (NKJV) 23And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them.
24So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: "Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them,
25who by the mouth of Your servant David have said:
'Why did the nations rage,
And the people plot vain things?
26The kings of the earth took their stand,
And the rulers were gathered together
Against the Lord and against His Christ.'27
"For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together

28to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done.

29Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word,
30by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus."
31And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

Collective praise and worship brings collective power!

Conclusion:

Hebrews 10:19 - 25 (NKJV) 19Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus,  20by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh,
21and having a High Priest over the house of God,
22let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
23Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.
24And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,
25not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

ILL: The Church is like coals of fire – when a coal is removed, it becomes cold and dark. Why the Church? Because we need each other in order to stay hot under the anointing!

845 - Running Faster Than God

July 18, 2010

Sermon #845

Running Faster Than God

James 1:2 - 8 (KJV) 2My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into diverse temptations;
3Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
4But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
5If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
6But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
7For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
8A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

Introduction:

I firmly believe that last Sunday was the worst Lord's Day in my life. It really began several weeks ago.

The oven door on my wife's cook stove locked and would not unlock as long as the power was on. And, you cannot cook on an electric stove with no power. Her brother, Steven told her that he wanted to bless us with a brand new side-by-side refrigerator/freezer and a new stove that would slip into our cabinet space. Mary said that we would give our perfectly good refrigerator/freezer to the church food bank.

Fine! So with the help of friends and two pick-up trucks, we brought the units to our house and put them in the sunroom after we discovered that some kitchen cabinets would have to be modified to accept the new units. Last Saturday the microwave blew up! This is harvest season and Mary is in her canning mode. No way to cook all that food and it's Sunday. I know that I have a meeting all day Monday.

I made the excuse, "The donkey is in the ditch" so we have to get him out. I went and bought a new microwave. First, I had to get the old one out of the cabinet. It was heavy, greasy, and nothing to hold on to.

The result was pain in my back and legs. The new one had an extension that did not show in the measurements - it would not fit. The instructions said that there had to be four inches of air space – we could not use it! Now I had to cut a hole and had to go purchase a saw; but I had to get the old microwave out of the box I had put it in. It was now 9:00 pm. I was tired and in pain. So, I took a shower and went to bed, having accomplished nothing.

Monday I went and taught at the conference. When I returned home, Mary was cooking. She had taken back the microwave that would not fit, purchased another, and one of the men from the church had stopped by to bring us some berries. He had cut out the hole and installed the microwave.

"All right Lord
- I get it. I was sinfully violating Your Sabbath!"

"No, Paul you don't get it – you were running ahead of Me – it did not have to be taken care of until Monday and I had someone to take care of it!"

  • Timing is everything

Ecclesiastes 3:1 - 11 (NKJV) 1To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven:
2A time to be born,
And a time to die;
A time to plant,
And a time to pluck what is planted;
3A time to kill,
And a time to heal;
A time to break down,
And a time to build up;
4A time to weep,
And a time to laugh;
A time to mourn,
And a time to dance;
5A time to cast away stones,
And a time to gather stones;
A time to embrace,
And a time to refrain from embracing;
6A time to gain,
And a time to lose;
A time to keep,
And a time to throw away;
7A time to tear,
And a time to sew;
A time to keep silence,
And a time to speak;
8A time to love,
And a time to hate;
A time of war,
And a time of peace.
9What profit has the worker from that in which he labors?
10I have seen the God-given task with which the sons of men are to be occupied.
11He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.

  • Anytime there is available space and time, the devil will take it.

    James 3-4 (NKJV) 3Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
    4But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing…

  • Between faith and the answer, you will always find trouble.

    John 16:31 - 33 (NKJV) 31Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe?
    32Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
    33These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."

    ILL: One of my problems was that I had the meeting coming up. A secular company produced this meeting. I have never ministered in a program arranged by a secular company. Dr. Myles Monroe and I were to minister together. I have great respect for Dr. Monroe and have never been on a platform with him in my life. People were paying $199 to hear us speak. I have never had anyone pay to hear me before! I accepted the care of that meeting on myself, therefore the stove and microwave problem was enhanced.

    Paul wrote:

    Philippians 4:6 - 7 (NKJV) 6Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;
    7and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

  • Care always brings trouble

    Luke 10:38 - 42 (NKJV) 38Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house.
    39And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet and heard His word.
    40But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, "Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me."
    41And Jesus answered and said to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things.
    42But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her."

    Why was Martha "worried and troubled?"

    • She was concerned about fixing the meal
    • She was concerned because it had to be done – now!
  • What we should remember

  • God is in charge

    Psalm 24:1 - 2 (NKJV) 1The earth is the Lord'S, and all its fullness,
    The world and those who dwell therein.
    2For He has founded it upon the seas,
     And established it upon the waters.

    Haggai 2:8 (NKJV) 8'The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine,' says the Lord of hosts.

    • What if we cannot destroy the terrorist? - God is in charge!
    • What if the oil pipe cap doesn't hold? - God is in charge!
    • What if Israel hits the Iranian nuclear centers? - God is in charge!
    • What if my car breaks down? - God is in charge!
    • What if my daughter gets pregnant?     - God is in charge!
    • What if my son gets on drugs? - God is in charge!
    • What if I lose my job?     - God is in charge!
  • Get refreshed

    ILL: Ministry takes a lot out of me. I needed a Sunday nap!

    • Elijah under the anointing

      1 Kings 18:45 - 46 (NKJV) 45Now it happened in the meantime that the sky became black with clouds and wind, and there was a heavy rain. So Ahab rode away and went to Jezreel.  46Then the hand of the Lord came upon Elijah; and he girded up his loins and ran ahead of Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

    • Two days later

      1 Kings 19:1 - 4 (NKJV) 1And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, also how he had executed all the prophets with the sword.  2Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time."
      3And when he saw that, he arose and ran for his life, and went to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.
      4But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, "It is enough! Now, Lord, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!"

    • Elijah had not replaced what he lost under the anointing

      1 Kings 19:5 - 8 (NKJV) 5Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an angel touched him, and said to him, "Arise and eat."
      6Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again.
      7And the angel of the Lord came back the second time, and touched him, and said, "Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you."
      8So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the mountain of God.

    C.     Remember what the Lord has done

    Isaiah 40:28 - 31 (NKJV) 28Have you not known? Have you not heard?
    The everlasting God, the Lord,
    The Creator of the ends of the earth,
    Neither faints nor is weary.
    His understanding is unsearchable.
    29He gives power to the weak,
    And to those who have no might He increases strength.
    30
    Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall,
    31But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength;
    They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
    They shall run and not be weary,
    They shall walk and not faint.

    ILL: At the conference I told them:

    • How the Lord fed my family by a widow
    • How the Lord got us through 7 years of school
    • How the Lord got us our house
    • How the Lord purchased the land for the Cathedral of His Glory
    • How the Lord got this building
    • How the Lord sent missionaries to the world
    • How the Lord opened the doors for worldwide television

Conclusion

Eagles lock their wings and let the storms lift them above the tumult. Mount up your wings. Tomorrow will be a sunny day!

845 – The Man who would be King

July 18, 2010

Sermon: #845

The Man Who Would Be King

1 Kings 1:41 - 43 (NKJV) 41Now Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they finished eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the horn, he said, "Why is the city in such a noisy uproar?" 42While he was still speaking, there came Jonathan, the son of Abiathar the priest. And Adonijah said to him, "Come in, for you are a prominent man, and bring good news."
43Then Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, "No! Our lord King David has made Solomon king.

Introduction: The Old Testament book of Kings is more than a book of history. It is a study of mankind, the psychology of men, the nature of sin, and the ultimate victory of God.

  1. Adonijah was the man who would be king.

1 Kings 1:5 - 6 (NKJV) 5Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, "I will be king"; and he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.
6(And his father had not rebuked him at any time by saying, "Why have you done so?" He was also very good-looking. His mother had borne him after Absalom.)

ILL: Haggith was one of David's wives, she had two sons, Absalom and Adonijah, both of whom rebelled and tried to take the throne.

  • The basic sin

    Genesis 3:4 - 5 (NKJV) 4Then the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. 5For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

    Isaiah 14:12 - 14 (NKJV) 12"How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!
    How you are cut down to the ground,
    You who weakened the nations!
    13For you have said in your heart:
    'I will ascend into heaven,
    I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;
    I will also sit on the mount of the congregation
    On the farthest sides of the north;
    14I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
    I will be like the Most High.'

  • "Exalt" describes it

    • Sin is Pride
    • Sin is Arrogance
    • Sin is Self-Conceit
    • Sin always leads to rebellion
  • The Psychology of sin

    • Adonijah felt that he was the best man to hold the office
    • He felt he had the ability and therefore the right
    • He felt he could govern the country better than anyone else
    • He felt that the others could not do it right
    • He wanted the thing so it was right
    • It would be wonderful to be king
  • Self Advertisement

    1 Kings 1:5 (NKJV) 5Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, "I will be king"; and he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.

    • He builds himself a false résumé
    • Gets a false title
    • Buys a false degree
  1. He never lacks encouragement (others will be right behind)

1 Kings 1:7 (NKJV) 7Then he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest, and they followed and helped Adonijah.

  1. Joab

    Joab was one of the greatest soldier of the time and one of David's "mighty men" (Force!)

  2. Abiathar

    Abiathar was one of the two chief priests (Religion)

    ILL: Both of these men were heroes of the people. They did not care who was on the throne as long as they could be the power behind the throne.

  • Satan does not care what controls your life - Pride – Lust – Greed – Drugs – Religion - as long as he is the power behind them!
  1. The sin and rebellion always looks successful

1 Kings 1:9 - 10 (NKJV) 9And Adonijah sacrificed sheep and oxen and fattened cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by En Rogel; he also invited all his brothers, the king's sons, and all the men of Judah, the king's servants. 10But he did not invite Nathan the prophet, true religious authority) Benaiah, the mighty men,(true men of power) or Solomon his brother.(true heir to the throne)

  1. At first he was fearful – but nothing happened!

  • The first rebellion = nothing
  • The first illicit sex = nothing
  • The first drug = nothing
  • The first attempt at taking office = nothing
  • (At first one can get by with a little sin – but a little sin is never enough)
  1. Success – man!

    1 Kings 1:41 - 42 (NKJV) 41Now Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they finished eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the horn, he said, "Why is the city in such a noisy uproar?" 42While he was still speaking, there came Jonathan, the son of Abiathar the priest. And Adonijah said to him, "Come in, for you are a prominent man, and bring good news."

  • Feasting
  • Drinking
  • Celebration (he thought the noise was for himself)

  • The pleasures of sin – for a season

ILL: While Adonijah and his friends were feasting, Solomon and David were preparing – sin always believes it can have success without work and preparation!

  • Sex without marriage
  • Financial success without investment
  • Pleasure without cost
  1. There is always a day of reckoning

ILL: Remember the Robin Hood stories – the day always come when King Richard comes back!

1 Kings 1:43 - 53 (NKJV) 43Then Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, "No! Our lord King David has made Solomon king.
44The king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites; and they have made him ride on the king's mule. 45So Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon; and they have gone up from there rejoicing, so that the city is in an uproar. This is the noise that you have heard. 46Also Solomon sits on the throne of the kingdom. 47And moreover the king's servants have gone to bless our lord King David, saying, 'May God make the name of Solomon better than your name, and may He make his throne greater than your throne.' Then the king bowed himself on the bed. 48Also the king said thus, 'Blessed be
the Lord God of Israel, who has given one to sit on my throne this day, while my eyes see it!'"

49So all the guests who were with Adonijah were afraid, and arose, and each one went his way.
50Now Adonijah was afraid of Solomon; so he arose, and went and took hold of the horns of the altar. 51And it was told Solomon, saying, "Indeed Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon; for look, he has taken hold of the horns of the altar, saying, 'Let King Solomon swear to me today that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.'"
52Then Solomon said, "If he proves himself a worthy man, not one hair of him shall fall to the earth; but if wickedness is found in him, he shall die." 53So King Solomon sent them to bring him down from the altar. And he came and fell down before King Solomon; and Solomon said to him, "Go to your house."

ILL: God raises up and does it openly!

Conclusion: Every knee will bow – so why not do it now?

Philippians 2:5 - 11 (NKJV) 5Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,
6who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
