851 - Understanding the Anointing

August 29, 2010

Sermon #851

Understanding the Anointing

Introduction:
Last Sunday, I ministered on the "Every Member a Minister," and the anointing of the Holy Spirit fell on me to minister healing.

Acts 10:34 - 39 (NKJV) 34Then Peter opened his mouth and said: "In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality.
35But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him.
36The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ—He is Lord of all—
37that word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached:
38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.
39And we are witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they killed by hanging on a tree.

  1. The Anointing is the tangible presence of God

Mark 5:25 - 34 (NKJV) 25Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years,
26and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse.
27When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment.
28For she said, "If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well."
29Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction.
30And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched My clothes?"

31But His disciples said to Him, "You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, 'Who touched Me?'"
32And He looked around to see her who had done this thing.
33But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.
34And He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction."

  1. Jesus felt the power go out from Him

  2. The anointing will pull physical strength with it

2 Chronicles 5:13 - 14 (NKJV) 13indeed it came to pass, when the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord, and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and praised the Lord, saying: "For He is good, For His mercy endures forever,"
that the house, the house of the Lord, was filled with a cloud,
14so that the priests could not continue ministering because of the cloud; for the glory of the Lord filled the house of God.

ILL: Last Sunday I could not "continue ministering."

Exodus 17:8 - 13 (NKJV) 8Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim.  9And Moses said to Joshua, "Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand."
10So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
11And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.
12But Moses' hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
13So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

1 Kings 18:45 - 46 (NKJV) 45Now it happened in the meantime that the sky became black with clouds and wind, and there was a heavy rain. So Ahab rode away and went to Jezreel.
46Then the hand of the Lord came upon Elijah; and he girded up his loins and ran ahead of Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

1 Kings 19:4 - 8 (NKJV) 4But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, "It is enough! Now, Lord, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!"
5Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an angel touched him, and said to him, "Arise and eat."
6Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again.
7And the angel of the Lord came back the second time, and touched him, and said, "Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you."
8So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the mountain of God.

ILL: Last Sunday after the anointing lifted, I went home and slept till 7:00PM, then went back to bed and slept till 7:00 AM. – I really needed some of that "angel food."

  3. The woman tapped into - placed a demand upon - the anointing

Matthew 9:20 - 22 (NKJV) 20And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment.
21For she said to herself, "If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well."
22But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, "Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well." And the woman was made well from that hour.

Matthew 9:27 - 31 (NKJV) 27When Jesus departed from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out and saying, "Son of David, have mercy on us!" 28And when He had come into the house, the blind men came to Him. And Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?"
They said to Him, "Yes, Lord."
29Then He touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith let it be to you."
30And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, saying, "See that no one knows it."
31But when they had departed, they spread the news about Him in all that country.

Mark 10:46 - 52 (NKJV) 46Now they came to Jericho. As He went out of Jericho with His disciples and a great multitude, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the road begging.
47And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"
48Then many warned him to be quiet; but he cried out all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"
49So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called.
Then they called the blind man, saying to him, "Be of good cheer. Rise, He is calling you."
50And throwing aside his garment, he rose and came to Jesus.

51So Jesus answered and said to him, "What do you want Me to do for you?"
The blind man said to Him, "Rabboni, that I may receive my sight."
52Then Jesus said to him, "Go your way; your faith has made you well." And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road.

ILL: They warned him, "be quiet," but he "called out more." What was he doing? – Putting a demand on the anointing!

  1. She felt the anointing come out of Him – it was a real, tangible substance.

Mark 5:29 - 30 (NKJV) 29Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction.
30And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched My clothes?"

  1. Heat

Ezekiel 3:10 - 15 (NKJV) 10Moreover He said to me: "Son of man, receive into your heart all My words that I speak to you, and hear with your ears.
11And go, get to the captives, to the children of your people, and speak to them and tell them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD,' whether they hear, or whether they refuse."
12Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard behind me a great thunderous voice: "Blessed is the glory of the Lord from His place!"
13I also heard the noise of the wings of the living creatures that touched one another, and the noise of the wheels beside them, and a great thunderous noise
14So the Spirit lifted me up and took me away, and I went in bitterness, in the heat of my spirit; but the hand of the Lord was strong upon me.
15Then I came to the captives at Tel Abib, who dwelt by the River Chebar; and I sat where they sat, and remained there astonished among them seven days.

Psalm 39:3 (NKJV) 3My heart was hot within me; While I was musing, the fire burned.
Then I spoke with my tongue:

Matthew 3:11 (NKJV) 11I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Acts 2:3 - 4 (NKJV) 3Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.
4And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

  2. Falling or being weak under the power

1 Kings 8:10 - 11 (NKJV) 10And it came to pass, when the priests came out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the Lord,
11so that the priests could not continue ministering because of the cloud; for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord.

Genesis 15:7 - 18 (NKJV) 7Then He said to him, "I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to inherit it."
8And he said, "Lord GOD, how shall I know that I will inherit it?"
9So He said to him, "Bring Me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon."
10Then he brought all these to Him and cut them in two, down the middle, and placed each piece opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds in two.
11And when the vultures came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
12Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, horror and great darkness fell upon him.

13Then He said to Abram: "Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years.
14And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions.
15Now as for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age.
16But in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete."
17And it came to pass, when the sun went down and it was dark, that behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a burning torch that passed between those pieces.
18On the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying:
"To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates—

Daniel 10:10 - 11 (NKJV) 10Suddenly, a hand touched me, which made me tremble on my knees and on the palms of my hands.
11And he said to me, "O Daniel, man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak to you, and stand upright, for I have now been sent to you." While he was speaking this word to me, I stood trembling.

John 18:5 - 6 (NKJV) 5They answered Him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I am He." And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them.
6Now when He said to them, "I am He," they drew back and fell to the ground.

Acts 9:1 - 5 (NKJV) 1Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest  2and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.
3As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven.
4Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?"
5And he said, "Who are You, Lord?"
Then the Lord said, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads."

ILL: There may be many reasons for these reactions – but it may be the anointing!

  3. The anointing can be transmitted

1 Kings 19:19 - 20 (NKJV) 19So he departed from there, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he was with the twelfth. Then Elijah passed by him and threw his mantle on him.
20And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah, and said, "Please let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you."
And he said to him, "Go back again, for what have I done to you?"

2 Kings 2:6 - 14 (NKJV) 6Then Elijah said to him, "Stay here, please, for the Lord has sent me on to the Jordan."
But he said, "As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!" So the two of them went on.
7And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went and stood facing them at a distance, while the two of them stood by the Jordan.
8Now Elijah took his mantle, rolled it up, and struck the water; and it was divided this way and that, so that the two of them crossed over on dry ground.
9And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, "Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?"
Elisha said, "Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me."
10So he said, "You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.

11Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
12And Elisha saw it, and he cried out, "My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!" So he saw him no more. And he took hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces.
13He also took up the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and stood by the bank of the Jordan.
14Then he took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, and said, "Where is the Lord God of Elijah?" And when he also had struck the water, it was divided this way and that; and Elisha crossed over.

2 Kings 13:20 - 21 (NKJV) 20Then Elisha died, and they buried him. And the raiding bands from Moab invaded the land in the spring of the year.
21So it was, as they were burying a man, that suddenly they spied a band of raiders; and they put the man in the tomb of Elisha; and when the man was let down and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived and stood on his feet.

What is that? The Anointing!

Acts 5:12 - 16 (NKJV) 12And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. And they were all with one accord in Solomon's Porch.  13Yet none of the rest dared join them, but the people esteemed them highly.
14And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women,
15so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them.
16Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.

Acts 19:11 - 12 (NKJV) 11Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul,  12so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them.

  1. The anointing breaks bondages

Isaiah 10:27 (NKJV) 27It shall come to pass in that dayThat his burden will be taken away from your shoulder, And his yoke from your neck,
And the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.

Conclusion: The Church can hinder the anointing

Mark 6:4 - 6 (NKJV) 4But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house."
5Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.
6And He marveled because of their unbelief. Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching.
